About RideBriefing
RideBriefing turns a GPX file into a briefing for a bike ride: the weather along the route at the time you'll be there, every climb categorised, the road surface, timings and what to wear. Organisers share it with their group in one link.
Who makes it
RideBriefing is an independent, non-commercial side project, built by a cyclist who organises group rides and got tired of answering the same questions in the group chat every weekend. It isn't affiliated with Komoot, Strava, Garmin or any other company. It is free, without ads, and doesn't sell data. Contact: info@ridebriefing.com.
What it does
- Weather on your timeline: works out when you reach each point of the route from your start time and target average speed, and shows the forecast there and then, including headwind, tailwind and crosswind sections. More
- Climbs: finds every climb and categorises it from Cat 4 to HC, with the gradient for each kilometre. More
- Road surface: paved, gravel, dirt or cobbles, and the type of road, from OpenStreetMap. More
- Sharing: one link with a rich preview in messaging apps; riders need no account, and only the organiser can change it. More

How it works
Your GPX file is analysed in your browser. Timings come from a physics model that keeps a steady effort: slower uphill, faster downhill, averaging the speed you set. Climbs are found on the smoothed elevation profile and rated by length multiplied by average gradient.
Where the data comes from
- Weather and elevation: Open-Meteo, which combines national weather services' forecast models, up to 16 days ahead.
- Road surface and road types: OpenStreetMap, matched to your route with Valhalla on servers run by FOSSGIS e.V.
- Climb names: OpenStreetMap, through the Overpass API.
- Maps: OpenStreetMap and OpenTopoMap.
Privacy
No account, no cookies, no tracking. Nothing is stored unless you create a share link; shared rides are visible only to people with the link, aren't indexed by search engines, and are deleted 30 days after the ride. The site is hosted in the EU. Details in the privacy policy.
Limitations
- Forecasts are forecasts: most reliable within three days, available up to 16 days ahead.
- Timings assume road-like riding; wind isn't yet included in the estimated times.
- Surface data is only as good as OpenStreetMap, which is excellent in most of Europe but not perfect.
